It’s all cozy here in November. Low temperatures and dusk sets in around 5. There is a calmer atmosphere to the days and a desire to go inward.
Hygge is the Danish concept of coziness and mindfulness. Embracing the season you are in an making the time to care for oneself. When it comes to the mindset of cold autumn nights, transitioning to winter light – I reach toward an atmosphere of warmth and comfort.
I love candlelight. Nothing can beat a dim dusky day, lighting candles and brewing a warm cup of tea & settling in with a book or film. Sometimes that stay-at-home nights are exactly what one needs after a busy work week, or simply to unwind.
L’apothicaire Co. is a small batch botanical apothecary based in California. They curate soy wax based candles with organic cotton wicks – but it’s the theme of the blends that I love the most. Also I prefer the cork bottles and old-timey labelling that maker Brianna has meticulously created. Images invoking tarot cards and 19th century art make them a beautiful décor piece but once you smell the dulcet aromas of the candles, you can’t help but escape into the scenes etches onto the bottles.
The Noir collection is perfect for the Fall into Winter season. It’s the darkening of days and chill of the nights, old roads and the slight eeriness that echoes Ray Bradbury’s novels: enchantment and mystery. I know once October passes, people automatically jump to winter but I for one, am enjoying the present November mood.
I cannot get over the design of these candles. As a lover of flora, fauna, literature I will admit apothecary falls into that spectrum.
Graveyard Roses is my beloved pick, for it reminds me of the south: fresh soil, muted floral notes like rainfall on roses and green grass. I think about being in Virginia and the fresh air that lingered with forest mist and florae.
Fortune + Fate is the younger sister to Graveyard Roses, its more floral but reminds me of creaky caravans and bayou nights. It’s sweeter and intoxicating. Features notes of elderberry and black amber.
Forbidden is another favorite, think of stepping into a misty forest where the jeweled apples grow. It’s neutral but bursting with plant aromas. It’s a secret orchard of past eras.
Nevermore is the perfect companion for the reader, think tea leaves and wood, its spicy with a subtle sweet cinnamon. It’s the reader’s candle, hearkening to old pages – the ephemeral smell of new books and fallen rain.
L’apothicaire Co. thoughtfully packages their candles in sustainable form. With beautiful kraft paper featuring curios and oddities – I truly recommend getting the wrapping paper off gentle so you can preserve and reusue them. The kraft ribbons inside are also recyclable.
Whether you’re looking for some autumn to winter decor, or if your aesthetic is a bit dark romance meets southern belle then L’apothicaire Co. has got you covered.
