Zero Waste & Vegan Lunch Box w/ PlanetBox

I am embarking the final stage for my bachelors in university. Cue the emotions of excitement but anticipation of whats to come & the dedication that lies ahead. Studies are meant to challenge us and at times we put ourselves last. We fall out of balance with our health and succumb to the maddening late-nights spent editing, writing, or formulating. I’d always fallen into the category of neglecting to eat at the so called “proper” standardized times. Be it school or work when you feel rushed or need to catch the train, a deadline, or hour & it you forget to nourish yourself. And sometimes you get tempted by what’s available in the university cafeterias which may or may not lead to healthy choices, or produce waste – and if you, like me, have food allergies? It’s instantly a debacle.
I thought about attempting the zero waste mentality to meals when you’re in school, work, or even a trip. Perhaps it saves money, or offers you to make better choices. It definitely cuts down on waste, which was important for me to address.

PlanetBox creates classic stainless steel lunch boxes that are an excellent alternative to plastic or single serve containers. No lead, BPA, or phthalates here folks, and its recyclable after your long years of use (no waste). I received the ShuttleBox with the Shuttle Carry Bag (which I highly recommend, to ensure longevity of your box & they’re BPA free + recycled materials used). I don’t like plastic; I want to avoid it as much as possible, especially when it concerns what I eat.
I gave myself a challenge: Create a vegan & zero waste meal for my Shuttle Box. I ventured to the farmers markets for fresh fruit & product, nuts (protein), found veggie chips in bulk! I recommend taking cotton or reusable product bags instead of the plastic ones they have at stores, or even mason jar (know your jar weight!)

My meal comprised of unsweetened coconut yogurt* (the container is recyclable) with a drizzle of grade B maple syrup & a heapful of chia seeds (protein & omega-3s), sliced strawberries and a handful of almonds to dip them in, Sliced zucchini (which I also dipped in the yogurt) and lots of dehydrated veggies to round the meal. I take my own spoon & cloth napkin as well!

It took me less than 15 minutes to comprise this meal, mostly chopping fruits and veg and ladling in yogurt and its toppings. I really encourage y’all to try meal prep and ditch plastic for safer and earth-friendly alternatives. Check out PlanetBox for more inspiration on making your own rainbow meals.

“Don’t just be good to others, be good to yourself too.”

It took a few months in for Los Angeles to experience the cool weather we have been longing for, minus the rainfall. So Fall has been a living in warm layers, countless cups of coffee (with pumpkin syrup & coconut milk creamer), old films & fireplaces, wistful dreams and a autumnal motivation to pursue and chase your dreams.

I think theres a certain alchemy to dreams. Perhaps I have written about this before but I believe in pursuing and creating whatever we wish to create. Motivation (can) take effort, invest time in what you believe in and no when to walk away. The concept of failure seems like a ghastly or debilitating concept instead of letting it show us different lessons or perceptions. The road(s) we take can change along the way. To go about a different path or look back doesn’t distort our growth, it can reveal more about what we genuinely want, or no longer need.

Anyways, the season of winter is almost near. Use more blankets, burn more natural candles, laugh over cups of warmed coffee, invest in more conversations, smile at strangers. Sometimes the world can be dark or uneasy but there is strength in kindness, power in living, & wisdom in education.

“I woke early, thrilled by the prospect of endless days to fill however I wished. I would read. I would explore.”

Tonight is for pjs, midnight coffee & streaming The Ice Storm on Netflix because I have 90’s Christina Ricci cravings and Mermaids is no longer available. So much pumpkin pie was baked and consumed I will probably dream about rolling out pie-dough and fire-places and snow.

Lately I have been talking and encouraging myself, and I encourage everyone to do it. You know when you feel like you want to do something, but sometimes theres an element that holds you back? I really believe fear only has power, when you give in to it. I think about the dreams I used to have that involved water, jumping into an ocean or another great body of water and since I cannot swim, I would feel terrified and grasp for the surface, never seeing what lied beneath
Maybe the real nightmare is living a life un-lived, or letting doubt consume us. What lies beneath that sea? Or on the open road ahead. Happiness is a journey. Its a museum full of various, numinous works of art that can never look the same because everyones is different and theres a beauty in the diversity. So whenever those thoughts, sentiments of doubt rise up like smoke, counter them. Push yourself to believe in your own dreams instead of leaving doors unlocked and possibilities unexplored

Autumn Necessities 2013

autumn essentials
autumn essentials

Where to begin! This post has been a long time coming but finally compiled. A glorious treats of autumnal necessities. Today is a beautiful overcast day with a heavy chance of rain so I’m already wearing long socks, boots and sipping on some roobois tea.

Kinfolk Vol. 9 | I have had this issue since september but I have been so busy with school I only got the chance to read another wonderful compilation (as always) devoted to the weekend and as usual, beautiful photography!

Chocolita Raw “chocolate” | I love chocolate, but lately I have been trying to find alternatives and craved some raw chocolate, and came across Chocolita’s brand. This chocolate is raw, vegan, and uses fairly traded organic cacao. I purchased Lemon and Pine Pollen and Blueberry Lotus. I love this
raw chocolate, Lemon & Pine Pollen is reminiscent of white chocolate, heavenly and buttery. Blueberry lotus is fragrant and you definitely get blueberry flavor without losing a dark chocolate taste. Would I purchase these again? Yes!

Fawn Lily Botanica* – c/o Organic Chai Spice Artisan Soap  I don’t even know where to begin, I have long admired this shop for sticking to its methods of organic, ethically widharvested handmade products. The Chai soap is so fragrant! I initially wondered whether I would approve since chai is a distinct scent but this soap nails it perfectly & authentically: extra bonus: its made with sustainable palm oil.  Organic Botanical Delight Facial Steam It may (still) be slightly sunny here but the weather has gotten noticeably drier (and windy) which has been taking its toll on my skin and health (post on that coming soon) so I picked this facial steam to try out, very floral featuring organic chamomile, lavender, rose and other petals facia steams are used to moisturize, and given the ingredients used they can detoxify, stimulate or relax. Personally I have been dealing with a lot of allergies, congestion and dry skin so I am excited to treat my skin and respiratory system to this steam tea! If you have never done a facial steam I highly recommend watching some videos like <a href="http://“>this one or this one by Shiva to acquaint yourself. Have you ever tried a facial beauty steam?

*All of Fawn Lily Botanica’s creations are handmade in small batches from medicinal and organic ingredients derived from plants, and contain no harsh chemicals, additives, fragrances, colorants, preservatives

Wildwood Hot Apple Cider Blend | Another gift from Hannah that are i super excited to try out, I have made apple cider in the past but mostly used ground spices, these are the spices in full featuring the best of autumn: star anise, cinnamon, clove etc. I really need to go get some cider to mull!

La Papierre | Owl & Moon Stationary is so sweet for writing to penpals. The sets are up to you but the envelopes are made with 30% post consumer waste, i was really please with the quality of this seller

Elysium Apothecary Beeswax Candles | I love beeswax candles more than anything, now that its Autumn the weather is dwidling down and I cannot wait to light candles, drink tea and wear wool socks. Please note beeswax candles are available as a made-to-order so just message the shop to purchase some

Colorganics Lip Tint in Earth | Whenever I order a lip tint online I always have two worries. That the color will not be as strong, or that the color will be radically different than what i initially expected. That was not the case with this lip tint, its definitely a tint, but a strong one. I’m kind of obsessed with lip tints/color and this one is filled with moisturizing goodness like hemp seed, castor and beeswax. The color I chose is a deep true brown/red.

John Masters Organics Rose Foaming Face Wash | This is actually a little sample from my friend Hannah, but I have to say I enjoy that it contains no harsh chemicals, its gluten free and contains rose damascus. I will keep using the sample and see if I will purchase the full size as a staple, I am keeping my fingers crossed for the perfect cleanser!

Wigwam® Cypress socks | Sold at Madewell these are cozy grey cotton/nylon blend socks that are made in the US and I can’t get enough.
